Johnny Rotten Speaks Out

Johnny Rotten Interview August, 2007, NYC

Nobody has ever accused former Sex Pistols and Public Image Ltd frontman John Lydon a/k/a Johnny Rotten of being a shrinking violet.

In this fascinating interview from Urb magazine, the outspoken rock icon speaks his mind on a wealth of subject matter, from the great sound of vinyl records and his former band the Sex Pistols to Virgin Records founder Richard Branson and how hippies “ruined the record industry.” Throughout the video, Lydon paces like a caged animal, displaying his rock-solid obstinance and legendary acerbic wit. He surprisingly compliments faux TV pundit Stephen Colbert, talks about his work as a judge on a “battle of the bands” show and discusses his philosophy of life. Lydon is intelligent, opinionated and erudite and, throughout this short interview, never dull no matter the topic.

Comments:

Spot on, Rev. Lydon never fails to entertain, in myriad ways–from blowing up to speaking intelligently on all sorts of subjects. It’s funny to watch him slagging Green Day. Especially in light of the recent doc, American Hardcore, which showed the roots of hardcore punk in the U.S. And how unpunk Green Day has become. Not that they aren’t a great pop band. Boy, though, has he mellowed. Or maybe he’s always been this way. Just doesn’t so much feel the urge anymore to propagate the Sex Pistols PiL persona.
